UPC: English has been designated as an official language for all local and regional divisions

On day two of the Unified Patent Court (UPC), Italy, following France and Germany, has designated English as an official language for the local division, which is located in Milan.

Court of First Instance

As a result, English may now be a language of proceedings before all local divisions, in addition to the respective official languages of all participating contracting member states hosting the divisions, and English is the (only) language of proceedings before the Nordic-Baltic regional division.

In the central division, the language of proceedings is the language in which the European patent was granted (English, French or German).

Court of Appeal

The language of proceedings before the Court of Appeal is the language of proceedings before the Court of First Instance.
