Technical Assistant Southampton
Profile of Daniel Richards

I joined the Electronics, Engineering & IT team at D Young & Co in 2024 and am thrilled to get the opportunity to engage with so many fascinating new frontiers of technological progress, in rapidly developing fields such as artificial intelligence and machine learning, signal and image processing, and robotics, all of which build on my background in astrophysics.

I started at the firm as a Technical Assistant on an otherwise unremarkable Monday in September 2024 after graduating with a master’s degree in Physics and Astronomy earlier that summer. I’ve always had a strong affinity for both STEM and the humanities, and this combination of my intuitive grasp of physics and data with my penchant for the dramatic arts and enjoyment of rigorous historical debate has enabled me to develop a competent and thorough approach to problem solving and argumentation. This was further compounded by my work during university, in particular during my final year when my research project on the evolution of quasars in the early universe required a comprehensive understanding of space telescope design, data science, and clear communication. I’m now ready to further apply this skillset to intellectual property practice, in new and developing sectors like machine learning and AI, virtual reality, mechanical systems, audio/visual processing and other electronics and telecommunications fields in which patents may be sought.
